When it came to providing Wen Fong with models for painting, Li Jian tended to focus on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century artists who painted in loose, splashy styles. The bottom fan follows Bada Shanren, an early Qing-dynasty painter who was particularly beloved during the Republic period for his proto-modern, nearly abstract renditions of birds, flowers, and landscapes.
