Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau)

Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, una donna dell’alta società parigina nata in Louisiana, era famosa per il suo aspetto scaltro ed elegante. Sargent tentò di accrescere la propria fama dipingendo e mettendo in mostra il suo ritratto. Lavorando senza una commissione ma con la complicità della modella, ne sottolineò l’audace stile personale, dipingendo la spallina destra dell’abito che le scivola dalla spalla. Dopo che il ritratto ricevette più commenti di scherno che di apprezzamento al Salon di Parigi del 1884, Sargent ridipinse la spallina e si tenne il quadro. Quando lo vendette al Metropolitan, affermò: “Ritengo sia la cosa migliore che io abbia mai fatto”, ma chiese al Museo di celare il nome della modella.
