マダム X (ピエール・ゴートロー夫人)

ルイジアナに生まれたヴァージニー・アメリー・アヴェニョ・ゴートローは、巧みに着飾ることで有名なパリ社交界の著名人でした。サージェントは彼女の肖像画によって名声を高めようと思い、無料でこの作品を手がけました。モデルの了解を得てガウンの右肩の肩紐が落ちそうな様子を描くなど、彼女の大胆なスタイルを強調しました。1884年、サロン・ド・パリで冷笑を浴びた後、サージェントは肩紐を描き直し、それ以降公開することはありませんでした。後にメトロポリタン美術館に売却した際に彼は、「これは自分の最高傑作だと思っている」とコメントし、同時にモデルを匿名とすることを条件としました。
