Quando fu creato questo vaso, la fabbrica di porcellana reale francese di Sèvres era la più influente e prestigiosa d’Europa. Sia la forma che la decorazione sono innovative, come denotano il complesso disegno traforato del coperchio e della spalla, l’intenso colore turchese dello sfondo e la particolareggiata decorazione dipinta e dorata. La prima proprietaria fu Madame de Pompadour, l’amante di Luigi XV.
