Martin Carlin era noto per i suoi eleganti mobili decorati con le porcellane di Sèvres. La formella centrale di porcellana del secrètaire, dipinta da Edmé-François Bouillat, sul retro presenta le lettere che indicano l’anno 1776. La prima proprietaria del secrètaire fu la soprano Marie-Joséphine Laguerre, che ebbe una vita dissoluta e lussuosa grazie ai suoi ricchi e numerosi amanti. Il mobile fu poi acquistato da Maria Feodorovna quand’era ancora gran duchessa di Russia, infatti si era recata a Parigi nel 1782.
