Questo vaso, un capolavoro dell’Art Nouveau francese, è tra i progetti più ambiziosi del ceramista Hoentschel, che fu anche architetto, decoratore di interni e collezionista di opere d’arte. Motivi acquatici (pesci, crostacei, conchiglie e alghe) vengono sapientemente incorporati nel disegno e lo smalto verde marezzato fa ulteriormente risaltare il tema del mare. Questo vaso e il suo compagno furono esposti con grande evidenza all’Esposizione universale di Parigi nel 1900.
