[Union Officer Standing at Attention]

1861–65
Not on view
This formal portrait of a Union officer standing at attention in a handsomely appointed studio is typical of the thousands of similar likenesses of new recruits leaving home, perhaps for the first time in their lives. Dressed in a fitted single-breasted blue frock coat and light blue trousers, the soldier seems well prepared to meet whatever challenge is asked of him.
