Lo studio di Seurat che ritrae l’amico pittore Edmond François Aman-Jean (1860-1936) è considerato uno dei migliori ritratti a disegno dell’Ottocento. Aman-Jean e Seurat studiarono arte insieme a Parigi, dove condivisero lo studio nel 1879. Il disegno fu esposto al Salon di Parigi del 1883 e fu la prima opera esposta al pubblico del giovane artista allora ventitreenne. La tecnica caratteristica di Seurat che utilizzava il pastello Conté su carta testurizzata conferisce all’opera luminosità e armonia nei toni, mentre la posa classicamente equilibrata dell’artista visto di profilo trasmette un’eleganza senza tempo.
