La toletta di Venere

Madame de Pompadour, l’amante del re Luigi XV, fu una grande estimatrice di Boucher e ne fu la protettrice dal 1747 fino alla di lei morte avvenuta nel 1764. Questo famoso dipinto fa parte di una coppia commissionata per il gabinetto di toeletta a Bellevue, il suo castello vicino a Parigi. Nel 1750 Madame de Pompadour aveva recitato come protagonista in un’opera teatrale messa in scena a Versailles, intitolata appunto “La Toilette de Venus” e, anche se questo dipinto non è un ritratto, con ogni probabilità intendeva essere una lusinghiera allusione.
