Il pittore veneziano Giovanni Bellini, le cui opere furono ammirate da Dürer quando soggiornò a Venezia, probabilmente ispirò il motivo della Madonna in adorazione del Bambin Gesù addormentato. La madre della Vergine, sant’Anna, che veniva particolarmente venerata in Germania, osserva la scena. Il modello per sant’Anna fu la stessa moglie di Dürer, Agnes. Il quadro aveva una funzione di oggetto di preghiera privato.
