Mrs. John Crosby Brown (Mary Elizabeth Adams, 1842–1918)
The majority of the instruments seen in these galleries was collected by Mary Elizabeth Adams Brown (1842–1918) who, beginning in 1889, gave approximately 4,000 instruments to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This collection, named for her husband, became one of the world’s most historic and comprehensive.
