Incense Holder Ornament

Amazigh (Berber) jewels oftentimes created an overall effect of multisensory pleasure and opulence. In addition to being a beautifully crafted piece of metalwork, this object also facilitated a delightful olfactory function. A small hinge opens the top dome on this object which would have allowed for the placement of incense or other perfumed materials inside, contributing to a fragrant as well as visually stunning presence.


This small ornament might have been attached to any number of jewels, including a headdress or pectoral ornament. When suspended, the various pieces would have gently knocked into one another, creating an acoustic dimension in addition to the magnificent sight and smell.
