Urna reliquiaria di san Tommaso Becket

Questo oggetto, uno dei reliquiari più antichi relativi a Thomas Becket, l’arcivescovo di Canterbury assassinato nel 1170 da cavalieri della corte di Enrico II, è anche uno dei più raffinati. Lo spettacolare uso del niello nero sull’argento comunica un’immediatezza figurativa alla scena che descrive la morte di Becket. Un’iscrizione parzialmente conservata posta sul retro pare indicare che un tempo lo scrigno contenesse una reliquia del sangue di Becket; la gemma di vetro rossa in cima rafforza tale possibilità.
