聖トマス・ベケットの聖骨箱

この作品は、ヘンリー2世の騎士によって1170年に暗殺されたカンタベリー大司教トマス・ベケットゆかりの最古かつ最も優れた聖骨箱のひとつです。銀地に黒金象嵌を施した意匠は、ベケットの死の場面を目の当たりに見るような臨場感を与えています。裏面に一部残っている銘文は、この箱には以前ベケ ットの血の聖遺物が納められていたことを示唆しており、最上部の赤いガラスがその可能性を裏打ちしています。
