Smalti con la Crocifissione e simboli degli Evangelisti

L’ abate Bégon III (r. 1087-1107) ordinò l’esecuzione di preziose opere d’arte per il suo monastero di Conques. Tra queste quasi sicuramente figurava il gruppo qui presentato, singolare per l’insolita tecnica, lo stile e la gamma dei colori, e che probabilmente faceva parte della copertina di un libro. Su ogni pezzo, l’orafo sovrappose alcune placchette di rame, quella inferiore con fili metallici (cloisons) che delineano i tratti e i drappeggi, e quella superiore tagliata in modo da definire i profili delle figure e della croce.
