Le caratteristiche anatomiche di questa figura si basano probabilmente sulla musa che ispirò Lachaise durante tutta la sua vita: Isabel Dutaud Nagle, l’americana da lui sposata nel 1917. L’artista iniziò la sua carriera di scultore a Parigi agli inizi del Novecento. Poi nel 1906 seguì Isabel in America, dove rimase fino alla morte, divenendo uno dei più importanti scultori americani dedicati a rappresentare la figura umana. Donna in piedi fu la sua prima scultura a grandezza naturale. Il busto tondeggiante della figura, la schiena e le natiche piatte, i seni prosperosi, le mani sottili e le gambe e i piedi affusolati rappresentano per Lachaise l’ archetipo della donna ideale.
