Mug
Beginning in 1892 Rookwood collaborated with the Gorham Manufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island to have silver overlay designs placed on its Standard glaze pottery. Between September, 1892, and July, 1893, Gorham embellished 918 objects. Rookwood had no control over the silver designs, and as this mug exemplifies, the floral design of the silver bears little relation to the painted decoration of witch, flying bat and burning fire. The American Wing has another example of this technique, see 1974.214.28. For other examples of Rookwood Pottery, see 43.67, 45.147, 69.17, 69.37.1, 69.37.3, 1973.93, 1974.214.28, 1980.452, 1980.453, 1981.443, L.1999.101 1991.214, and 1991.335.
