Kyōka: The Mist of Sandara (Kyōka Sandara-kasumi)

This volume is an anthology of kyōka verses selected by the poet Senshūan Sandara Hōshi and privately published by the Kasumi poetry club in 1798. It includes one woodblock-printed illustration each by Katsushika Hokusai, Kitao Shigemasa, and Hasegawa Settan. The first illustration, by Shigemasa, captures a scene from the ancient Heian court. Settan, in the next image, includes a playful scene of the god of longevity, Jurōjin, seated on a donkey. The third illustration, by Hokusai, depicts daily life in a rural setting—a woodcarver at work, several female assistants, and a traveler resting—with a view of Mount Fuji in the background. A light and elegant touch typifies Hokusai's work of the Sōri period, early in his career. His signature reads Hokusai Sōri.
