Erica Fulgida

1813
Not on view
A watercolor on vellum of a flowering plant, Erica, commonly known as heath or heather. Redouté, a favorite of Empress Josephine, was the most famous botanical illustrator of the late 18th and early 19th century in France. His drawings of plants and flowers were well known through prints in luxury publications of the time. This delicate watercolor appears to be the model for plate 61 in Aimé Bonpland’s Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, published in Paris by Pierre Didot l’ainé in 1813.
