Seated bodhisattva (left attendant of a triad)

ca. mid-17th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 233
This figure is a bodhisattva—an enlightened being who has compassionately chosen to remain on earth and guide mortals toward nirvana. X-rays reveal cavities in the statue’s head and torso corresponding to rectangular outlines visible from the back. Although the torso is empty, the head contains a bokjang (enclosed ritual offering), a scrunched fibrous material similar to that in the Kashyapa displayed nearby. The figure’s hands, carved separately, are removable and absent in the scan.
