Inkstone cabinet

late 19th century
Not on view
This cabinet’s top compartment is covered with a two-panel lid. Inkstones, brushes, and other writing accoutrements would have been placed in the drawer. The artist leveraged the varied colors of the persimmon wood to highlight the dramatic dark grain across the surface. The undulating, streaky shape resembles ink brushstrokes. Minimally embellished with metallic fittings, the cabinet epitomizes the scholarly values of modesty and austerity.
