ロダンはイタリアそしてパリのルーブル美術館でルネッサンスの巨匠ミケランジェロの作品を間近で見たことにより、ミケランジェロの表現力豊かな造形の秘密を解き明かすことができたと思われます。ロダンは《アダムの創造》と名づけたこの作品の原型となった石こう模型を1881年のサロン・ド・パリに出展しました。一時は、この等身大以上の力強い像を、新たに建設が計画されていた装飾美術博物館の扉の《地獄の門》のデザインに組み込む予定でしたが、結局博物館建設は実現しませんでした。この作品は、メトロポリタン美術館が1912年に開いたロ ダン専門のギャラリーのために発注し、オリジナルの模型からブロンズで鋳造された最初の作品でした。
