ヨーロッパで初めて磁器製造に取り組んだのは、16世紀後期のフィレンツェのメディチの宮廷工房でした。トスカーナ大公フランチェスコ・デ・メディチ1世の庇護により、ヨーロッパで珍重されていた中国の染付磁器を模倣して、1574年頃に磁器の焼造に着手しました。メディチ家の磁器には、中国とオスマン帝国の陶磁器装飾の影響が見られますが、宮廷工房で作られた作品の造形の多くは、当時の硬石製の器や金工製品を原型としており、この水差しも例外ではありません。メディチ家の磁器は、約60点のみが現存しています。
