気球のモニュメント

1783年、モンゴルフィエ兄弟が熱気球によって史上初の有人飛行を達成しました。10分間の短い飛行でしたが、広く世間から賞賛され、王室は年末にこの偉業の記念碑の制作を命じました。クロディオンは、この作品のためのコンペに参加した才能ある7人の彫刻師のひとりでした。「名声」に導かれ風の神アイオロスに押される気球を上昇させるため、赤ん坊のような天使の像が燃料の藁を束ねています。軽快で遊び心たっぷりのロココ様式のこの作品を大理石で作ることはまず無理だったでしょう。記念碑が作成される前に熱気球が大衆化したため、制作は取りやめとなりました。
