モンタニェスは17世紀前半のスペインを代表する彫刻師でした。数多くの彫像とレタブルム(祭壇の上部に配置される彫刻)を制作し、その卓越した技術から「木の神」の愛称で呼ばれていました。この丸彫りの洗礼者聖ヨハネ像は、セビリアのヌエストラ・セニョーラ・デラ・コンセプシオン修道院にあったもので、典型的な前駆授洗者ヨハネ像を踏襲しつつ、鋭い視線、力強い肉体、そして自然な皮膚の色により、生き生きと表現されています。豊かな色彩と金箔が施されたこの作品では、モンタニュスの彫刻と絵画両方の才能が発揮されており、彼が画家と競いながら、信仰を導き強めるため魅惑的なリアリズムを実現しようとしていたことがうかがえます。
