パリで家具職人として成功し、数多くの王室向けの作品を手がけたジル・ジョベールは、国王ルイ15世のヴェルサイユ宮殿の書斎用にこの書き物机を製作し、1759年12月29日に納品しました。表面の装飾は、18世紀中頃に家具の化粧板としてフランスで人気のあった、赤地に金で装飾した中国漆器を模倣しています。部分的に透かし彫りが施されている金銅の飾り金具は、机の優雅な曲線を強調しているだけでなく、光沢のある深紅の漆塗りの表面を保護し縁取る機能を兼ねています。この作品は、1793–94年に王室の所有物が革命政府によって売却されるまでヴェルサイ ユ宮殿にありました。
