古来彫刻師たちは、ヘラクレスの偉業を扱った作品において、複雑な動きをする男性の力強い肉体を表現してきました。この丸彫りの彫刻は、神話の英雄ヘラクレスと、川の神アケロオスの格闘を表しています。アケロオスは男性、雄牛、そしてヘビに変身することができました。この作品は、ローマの弓兵に射抜かれた聖セバスチアヌスを描いた2点の大型の浮彫り彫刻を手がけた無名の彫刻師によると考えられています。誇張された激しい動きと極端な感情表現、そして肉体の細部にわたる徹底的な描写などに、この優れた彫刻師の特徴が表れています。
