現在パリのオルセー美術館に収蔵されているこのキャビネットの原型が1867年のパリの万国博覧会で展示された際、その評価はあまり高いものではありませんでした。しかしながら、ほぼ同一のこのキャビネットを自分用に作ったディールは、作品の出来に満足していていたものと思われます。造形・装飾ともに非凡なこの作品には、フランスの国家主義を強く表す伝説的な場面が描かれています。中央の飾り板には、451年のアッティラ王に率いられたフン族との戦いにおけるメロヴィス王の勝利が表されています。メロヴィスの乗っている戦車は、旗手が倒れた敵兵を踏みつけるよう雄牛を駆り立てています。
