ライオンの頭の形をしたヘルメット

このヘルメットはルネッサンス時代に古典様式で作られた、現存する最古の作品です。神話の英雄ヘラクレスが、その生皮を被り物とマントとして使ったネメアのライオンの頭部を表しています。生皮を身につけたヘラクレスは不屈の魂、勇気、そして忍耐の象徴としてルネッサンスの美術に頻繁に描かれました。重さが約 3.6 kgあるこのヘルメットは、銅メッキを施した外殻を巧みに型押しし てライオンの頭の形に作り上げ、それをサレットと呼ばれる通常の鋼製ヘルメットの上に取り付けてあります。美しい彫刻のようなこのヘルメットはまた、ルネッサンス初期の金工職人の傑作でもあります。
