男とケンタウロス

神話に登場する半身半馬のケンタウロスは、木が茂る人里離れた場所に住むとされていました。ギリシャ美術において頻繁に人間と敵対したケンタウロスは、そのことから文明人と相反する存在と見なされていました。この主題の典型的な作例は、アテネのパルテノン神殿のメトープ(浮彫石板)に見られますが、それはこの青銅の小像にもよく表れています。ケンタウロスの横腹から槍の先が突き出ていること、さらに男の背がケンタウロスより高いことから、戦いの勝者を推察することができます。
