眠るエロス

ヘレニズム美術は、題材及び様式の発達の両方において多様性を極めていました。芸術家は創意工夫に長け、年齢的特長を視覚的に正確に表現することに注力しました。幼い子供のモチーフが特に好まれ、赤子のヘラクレスやエロスといった神話上の人物をはじめ、風俗画では子供が遊んだりペットと戯れる様子などが題材としてよく扱われました。この愛の神を表したエロス像は、地上に横たわり弓矢も持っておらず、アルカイック時代のギリシャの詩に詠われた、屈強かつしばしば非情で気まぐれな存在として描かれていたイメージとはかなり異なっています。ロードス島で発掘されたとされるこの像は、現存する数少ない古代の青銅像のなかでも、青銅の使用によって可能となった即時性と写実的な細部の表現を示しています。
