サウスワースとハーズの共同経営によるボストンの写真スタジオは、著名な政治家、知識人、芸術家を顧客として一流のダゲレオタイプの肖像写真を撮影しました。1839年にパリで一般公開されたダゲレオタイプの技術は、その後急速に世界中に普及しました。銀鍍金を施した研磨銅板をカメラ・オブスキュラで露光し、水銀蒸気にさらすという現像方法ですが、その結果得られる画像は、十分な光 の下で見ると驚くほどの精密さと立体感を表しています。強い日差しと写真家の鋭い洞察力によって浮き彫りにされたレミュエル・ショーの堂々たる存在感は、スタジオで間接照明を使って撮影された従来の肖像写真からの大きな飛躍を示しています。
