《無題(カウボーイ)》は、アメリカを象徴するカウボーイ文化の創造的破壊を常に模索した写真家の最高傑作と言えます。カウボーイのイメージは、古くは最初の西部開拓者から、最近では作品制作当時まさに任期満了を迎えていたロナルド・レーガン大統領にいたるまで、アメリカ人の心に浸透していたイメージです。プリンスの作品は、神話(カウボーイ)の複製(広告)の複製(写真)であり、アメリカ社会が、常に実体験よりもイメージに惹き付けられること、すなわちプリンスが言うところの「本物とほとんど変わらないが本物ではないもの」に魅力を感じることに対する痛烈な批判でした。
