무제(카우보이)
는 항상 미국의 원형을 나타내는 이미지의 해체를 모색하던 프린스의 최고 걸작입니다. 프린스의 작품에 등장하는 카우보이는 최초의 서부 개척자들로부터 당시 임기를 다 채운 로널드 레이건 대통령과 더불어 미국의 원형을 상징하는 이미지입니다. 프린스의 사진 작품은 신화(카우보이)의 복제(광고)를 복제(사진)한 이미지로서 실제 체험이 아닌 이미지에 항상 매혹되는 우리 문화, 즉 작가가 “실제와 가장 가까운 것”이라고 말한 바 있는 문화에 대한 통렬한 비판입니다.
