頭蓋骨掛け
現在もニューギニアの南東部に住むケレワ族には、以前首狩りの慣習がありました。ケレワ族にとって最も重要な聖なる品はアギバ(頭蓋骨掛け)と呼ばれる平たい透かし細工の木製彫刻で、下部にある突起から人間の頭蓋骨を吊って掲げるものでした。個々のアギバは、それを彫った者の夢に現れた精霊を象徴するとされていました。ケレワ族の男性は、大規模な家屋に共同で住み、その中にはそれぞれの一族またはその分家の拝殿を祭った個別の小部屋がありました。拝殿にはいくつかのアギバとその他の聖なる品が収められていました。一族が集めた頭蓋骨の上に置かれたアギバは一族の生命力と権威を象徴しました。
