男女の祖先像
インドネシアのフローレス島のナガ族のものであるこの優れた祖先の像は、おそらく村の創始者一族の祖先を表したものと思われます。祖先の霊やその他の超自然的存在を人格化した人物像(アナ・デオ)として、頻繁に祖先の社で祭られました。独立した彫像だったとも考えられるこの作品は、社に祭られた儀式用の馬の像に乗っていたものが後で取り外され、聖なるものとして伝えられた可能性もあります。いずれにしろ、男性が女性の肩に優しく手をかけるしぐさなど、作品は見るものを引き付ける静かな威厳を放っています。
