Shinozuka Uraemon Reading the Prologue at the Miyakoza Theater

1794 (Kansei 6), 7th month
Not on view
Shinozuka Uraemon 篠塚浦右衛門, also referred to as Miyako Dennai III (都伝内), was the zagashira (stage manager or leader of the theatrical troupe) and announcer at the Miyakoza Theater in Edo. He holds a scroll that would have normally included the day’s upcoming Kabuki performances. But, looking carefully at the text (seen from reverse), it is actually a list of Sharaku’s second series of actor portraits, featuring pairs of figures with white mica grounds.
