エル・グレコによる風景画の最高傑作であるこの作品は、象徴的な都市景観を描いた美術の伝統の流れをくんでいます。彼の肖像画の傑作と同様、エル・グレコの主題に対するアプローチは、風景をそのまま忠実に描写して現実の景観を記録するのではなく、独自の解釈により街の本質を捉えようとするものでした。この作品ではトレドの東部を北から見た景色が描かれていますが、その角度からは大聖堂が構図に含まれなかったため、エル・グレコは創意工夫により、場面を圧倒するアルカサル王宮の左側に大聖堂を配置しました。ローマ時代に架けられたアルカンタラ橋に向けて一連の建物が急な斜面に建っており、タホ川の反対側にはサンセルバンド城が見えます。この作品はエル・グレコが亡くなった時に彼のトレドのアトリエにあったものを、エル・グレコの作品を7枚以上所有した著名な収集家デ・アルコス伯が後に購入したものです。
