ざんげ節に浮かれ騒ぐ人々

フランス・ハルスによるこの重要な初期の作品は、色彩、筆使い、そして込み合った構図などが、同時期のフランドル派の画家、ヤコブ・ヨルダーンスの作品を思い起こさせます。主題のざんげ節は、受難節直前の祝祭日のことであり、浮かれ騒ぎをして祝うことで有名です。ピクルド・ヘリング(酢漬けニシン)とジョン・ソーセージのふたりのコメディアンが、名前にちなんだ食べ物を身に着け、首の太い月桂冠を頭に戴いた若い「女性」(実は変装した男性)に言い寄っています。
