イタリア画壇の奇才のひとりであるマンテーニャが20歳代初期に描いたこの作品は、細部描写に長けた彼の驚くべき才能の開花が見てとれます。前景の岩の裂け目から植物が生え、川のさざ波が岸に押し寄せています。伝統的な主題にこれらの詳細を取り入れたことは、彼の画家としての力量を証明しています。人物が表現豊かに描かれているのは、当時の宮廷における人文主義の影響によると思われます。また、入念な風景描写は、ネーデルラント絵画に対するマンテーニャの憧憬を反映していると考えられています。
