The Lamentation

In this Lamentation scene, the lifeless body of Christ rests on the lap of the Virgin, surrounded by John the Evangelist and the followers known as the Three Marys. Tears well up in the eyes of these tightly arranged figures, expressing their deep grief over Christ’s death and inviting the viewer to grieve in turn. This painting is closely related to the style of an anonymous North Netherlandish painter known as the Master of the Virgo inter Virgines (Virgin among Virgins). This Lamentation and a Resurrection, formerly in the Rijksmuseum, were originally part of one large ensemble that juxtaposed a scene of grief with the promise of eternal life.
