ムリーリョによる最も魅力的な作品のひとつであるこの絵は、ムリーリョの傑作を数多く所有するサンティアゴ侯爵のコレクションに含まれていたものでした。1728年の目録作成時に《乳を与える聖母と聖子》として記載されています。幼子は鑑賞者に気付いて一時乳を飲むのをやめ、こちらを振り向いているかのように描かれています。ムリーリョの聖母子を主題とした作品が高く評価された理由は、使い古されたテーマに親しみと愛らしさを与えることができた彼の才能にあります。この作品は1670年代初期に彼が画家として全盛期を謳歌していた時期に描かれたものです。
