聖母子
ムリーリョによる最も魅力的な作品のひとつであるこの絵は、ムリーリョの傑作を数多く所有するサンティアゴ侯爵のコレクションに含まれていたものでした。1728年の目録作成時に《乳を与える聖母と聖子》として記載されています。幼子は鑑賞者に気付いて一時乳を飲むのをやめ、こちらを振り向いているかのように描かれています。ムリーリョの聖母子を主題とした作品が高く評価された理由は、使い古されたテーマに親しみと愛らしさを与えることができた彼の才能にあります。この作品は1670年代初期に彼が画家として全盛期を謳歌していた時期に描かれたものです。
