天体と大陸の寓話

ティエポロによる大型で最も素晴らしい油彩スケッチは、アポロが天空を横切るため飛び立とうとする日課を描いています。太陽神の回りの神々は惑星を象徴し、四辺の寓話の人物が大陸を表わしています。ティエポロはこのスケッチを1752年4月20日にヴェルツブルクの司教カール・フィリップ・フォン・グリーフェンクラウに献上しました。それはレジデンツ(宮殿)の階段の上の巨大な天井画として提案したもので、ティエポロの最高傑作と見なされる作品の下絵でした。角にグリザイユで描かれた人物は、装飾家・彫刻家のアントニオ・ボッシによって天井にスタッコで制作されました。
