アレクサンドリアの聖カタリナ

車輪による拷問を受けたという言い伝えのある聖カタリナは、広く崇拝された処女の殉教者でした。美しく、教養あふれる貴族出身の彼女は、フランス宮廷において特別な信仰対象となりました。車輪を持つ聖カタリナのこの肖像は、クレルモン・フェランの修道院にあったものだとされていますが、金地に施された上品なエナメル、カタリナの髪形、そして宝石が散りばめられた装飾は、パリで作られた金細工の特徴を示しています。他の聖人像とともに群像として聖堂に祭られたものと考えられます。
