オーシャンライナー(遠洋定期船)ノルマンディー号は、フランスのアールデコ様式の室内装飾の最後の大作でした。この壁画は、ファーストクラスの応接間のために作られた4点のうちのひとつです。名目上の主題は航海の歴史ですが、実在するとは思えないような船や神話の動物であふれているこの壁画は、明らかに物語を語ることが目的ではなく、装飾効果を狙ったものです。ノルマンディー号の乗客は、輸送手段というより雰囲気を楽しむために料金を払ったようなもので、応接間は息をのむような豪華さでした。鏡のような輝きはエグロミゼ技法によるもので、装飾を厚板ガラスの裏面に施し、滑らかな面を表向きにして壁に取り付けました。
