この壁画サイズの絵画は、ベアデンが住んだニューヨーク市ハーレムの街並みに捧げた作品です。軒を連ねる低い建物(共同住宅、教会、床屋、酒屋)は、レノックス・アベニューの132番街と133番街の間の彼のスケッチに基づいています。路上や屋内で働いている者、休んでいる者、遊んでいる者など人々のさまざまな営みが繰り広げられ、人間関係や社会習慣を辛辣かつ時にはユーモラスに描いています。コラージュの独創的な使い方と、サイズや比率を突如変化させ表現を強調する手法により、都会の生活のエネルギーと複雑さを巧みに捉えています。彼の作品の図様や素材は素朴なものでしたが、そこにはル ネッサンス絵画、キリスト教の図像、キュビズム、アフリカ部族の彫刻といった他の美術や文化に関する幾層もの意味が込められています。
