金蓮花と《ダンス》

パリ南西のイシー・レ・ムリノーにあったマティスのアトリエの様子を描いたこの作品は、彼がモロッコでの長期滞在からフランスに戻った1912年に制作されたものです。構図では左側に木製の肘掛け椅子の右半分が描かれ、右側には金蓮花を生けた花瓶が三脚テーブルに置かれています。背景全体に配置された人物群は、この作品のタイトルに《ダンス》とあることから分かるように、ニューヨーク近代美術館所蔵のマティスによる油彩の大作《ダンスI》(1909年)の一部が描かれています。マティスはこの主題で同サイズの作品を2点制作し、1作目であるこの作品がスケッチ風で明るい色使いであるのに対し、2作目(モスクワ、プーシキン国立美術館蔵)は情熱的な色彩で、背景に《ダンスII》(1909–10年、サンクト・ペテルブルク、エルミタージュ美術館収蔵)を描いています。
