オキーフは、1920年代に大型の花の絵画で名声を得ましたが、1929年以降は主にニューメキシコ州の風景に着想を得た主題で作品を描くようになりました。1929年から46年までの間ほぼ毎年ニューメキシコを訪れ、1949年に現地に移り住みました。彼女にとって荒野で拾った動物の骨は、時代を超越した砂漠の美しさと、揺ぎないアメリカ精神の象徴でした。この作品は一見写実的ですが、特定の詳細を割愛・誇張して骨の粗野な美しさを強調しています。作品のタイトルと赤、白、青の三色の色彩は、絶対的なアメリカ様式を特定することに固執した芸術家、作家、音楽家に対する風刺を意図したものです。
