ジャクソン・ポロックと妻のリー・クラズナーは1945年、ニューヨーク州イーストハンプ トン市スプリングズ地区の小さな家へ引っ越しました。その後数年にわたり、ポロックは敷地の納屋でいささか孤立した状態で制作活動を行い、独自のドリップ手法を考案しました。下処理も枠張りもしていないキャンバスを床に置き、木の枝やペンキをかき混ぜる棒を住宅用のエナメル塗料に浸し、書道を思わせる色の線を直接キャンバスに撒き散らしました。時にはペンキ缶からそのまま滴らせることもありました。ドリップ手法による最も大型の典型的な作品のひとつである《秋のリズム》は、ポロックの不慮の死の翌年に当館がクラズナーから購入したものです。
