中国の民間信仰では、托鉢僧や魔術師、謎めいた隠遁者などは、実は奇跡をもたらす修験者である「生きた羅漢」であり、僧や魔術師を装っていると考えられていました。明朝末期のように役人の汚職や愚かさが社会的秩序を脅かした時代には、このような迷信的な救世主信仰がことさら蔓延しました。吳彬による現存する最古の作品のひとつであるこの巻物では、古典的な人物描写の様式を取り入れ、奇怪な外見に内面の精神性を秘めた風変わりな奇人として羅漢を描く伝統を踏襲しています。ユーモラスな描写の中に、「一見不釣合いな外見の中に神聖さが隠されていることがある」という重要なメッセージを伝えようとしているのかも知れません。
